CNPC will intensify shale gas exploration and development in Chongqing

As known from CNPC Southwest Oil and Gas Field Company yesterday, CNPC will further intensify shale gas exploration and development in Chongqing, planning to form an annual capacity of 700 000,000 m³ till 2015 and an annual capacity of 4,500,000,000 m³ till 2020.

Shale gas, mined from shale beds, is a kind of important unconventional gas resources. Compared with the conventional natural gas, shale gas development has the advantage of long exploiting time and long production cycle. Most of the gas shale has a wide distribution range and large thickness, and is widespread, which makes the shale gas well to produce gas at a steady rate and in a long term.

It is known that Southwest Oil and Gas Field now has the mining right of 9 shale gas blocks, including 5 blocks in Chongqing with an area of 20,200 km2. Since 2007, CNPC has successively spent billions of Yuan in drilling 43 wells in relevant blocks. 7 shallow wells will be in Chongqing, among which 3 are completed, with an accumulated marketable gas amount of 11,760,000 m³. Related officials said that through key technology research, CNPC had formed three theme technologies, such as shale gas horizontal well track control, etc, ensuring the optimization and quickness of shale gas horizontal well work.

After a preliminary exploration, the shale gas resources in Chongqing block of Southwest Oil and Gas Field has reached 13,680,000,000,000 m³. At present, CNPC has reached a cooperation agreement with related departments of the city, proceeding overall cooperation with Chongqing in the exploration and development of shale gas, with a joint development area of about 16,800 km2.
